Mobile Refrigeration Units

Jerry Babb, Transport Refrigeration Specialist
In the Transport Refrigeration Industry, converting to HCFC or CFC refrigerants created a lot of problems and expenses for equipment and its owners. The compressor oil had to be changed to a specific type. Rubber hoses, pressure switches, driers, and Ids had to be changed also. The troubles began there and don't stop, there are more coming. Before I discovered the HC refrigerants, I was very busy replacing compressors, rubber hoses, blown manifold and head gaskets, and resoldering melted joints, all due to extreme heat and pressures created by these synthetic HCFC/CFC refrigerants.

Mobile Unit When I encounter a unit that has lost its charge, the system is dry nitrogen tested, any leaks are repaired, the compressor oil is checked, the drier changed, and the system is evacuated and recharged with HC-12a/134+ or HC-22a/502a with less than half the original charge. The unit is then test operated and has lower pressures, lower head temperatures, better compressor lubrication, and quicker pulldown, resulting in longer compressor life and lower energy cost. This unit is not only repaired, it is improved.

Refrigerated Trucks I have converted, after repairs, approximately sixty units to HC refrigerants. This includes all models and types: trailer units, small trucks, cold plate systems, etc. The results I see are low cost of product, lower operating pressures, lower AMP draw (20-30% energy cost), quicker pulldowns, no special oils to worry about, decrease in future repairs, and better lubrication resulting in longer compressor life. My proof is, I rarely see these units again for refrigeration problems. Change today to Hydro Cool's hydrocarbon refrigerants and improve the environment at the same time.
